Perfect!”

Although the kitchen was a mess, and he had to clean up everything, Ron was actually happy that he finally, after several attempts, had succeeded to make a perfect cake. It was covered with chocolate, and decorated with chocolate frogs, and whipped cream.

Hermione will love this, Ron thought for himself, pleased, as he put the cake in the oven. He knew it wasn’t the best place to hide it, but with the lack of other places to put it, this was the only place he could find for it.

He watched the time, and realized it was only half an hour left till Hermione arrived home from work. Quickly, he took out his wand from his pocket, and cleaned off the mess he had created in the kitchen.

Today was Hermione’s 20th birthday, and absolutely nothing could go wrong this day; it was also the day Ron was going to propose.

Smiling to himself, Ron hurried to shower, and put on some cologne on his face. When he got out from the bathroom 20 minutes later, he saw Hermione sitting on the sofa in the living room, leaning her head against the back of the sofa.

“Had a rough day?” Ron said softly, as he put his hands on her shoulder.

“You have no idea”, Hermione sighed. “I’m just glad to be home again.”

Ron smiled, and bent down to give her a small kiss.

“Hungry?” he asked her.

“Yes, but I’ve already prepared a lasagna while you were in the shower”, said Hermione.

Ron’s heart skipped a beat.

“You didn’t turn on the oven, did you?”

“Of course I did, Ron, how else am I suppose to make a—“

She didn’t finish the sentence, because Ron was already on his way to the kitchen, panicked.

He practically felt how his heart sank down to his stomach, when he opened the door to the oven, and saw that the cake was ruined.

“Ron, why did you suddenly run away from—“

Hermione stopped, and looked at the cake Ron now had taken out from the oven.

“Oh, I’m so sorry!” she exclaimed. “If I had known there was going to be a cake in there, I wouldn’t have…”

“It’s not the cake I’m worried about”, said Ron quietly. He didn’t feel as happy as he had done earlier today. Everything had gone wrong, nothing like he had planned. Hermione looked at him with sympathy, and pulled him into a hug.

“I’m really sorry”, she said.

“It was my fault”, said Ron. “It was a stupid place to put it”, he said. He let go of Hermione, and began to dig his fingers into the cake.

“What are you doing?” Hermione gasped.

Ron didn’t reply to that. He continued to dig the inside the cake, until he found a little object. It wasn’t ruined after all. He took it out, and showed Hermione a little golden ring.

Her eyes went wide, as she scrutinized the ring.

“Is that—“

Ron nodded.

“My plan was to propose to you when you found the ring in the cake”, he explained to her. “But I guess I have to do it this way instead…”

He reached for her hands, and looked into her eyes.

“Hermione”, he said stupidly. “Will you marry me?”

The words had slipped out from his mouth, but Hermione didn’t seem to care: she had flung her arms around him, before he had finished the sentence.

“Yes”, she whispered into his ear, and kissed every inch of his face.

Ron grinned sheepishly, and kissed her long and deeply.

“Happy birthday, Hermione”, he said, and pulled her into another kiss.

This day wasn’t so bad after all…
